The prevalence of Type II Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions; 1 in 9 Singaporeans suffer from Diabetes with 1 in 3 Singaporeans projected to develop the disease in their lifetime. If not managed well, Diabetes preludes other chronic illnesses such as stroke and kidney failure, and can lead to hearing loss, amputations and blindness! The Health Promotion Board (HPB) has made numerous efforts to remind us Singaporeans the importance of lifestyle changes to #BEATDiabetes. With the health of Singaporeans in mind, iLite GrainsPlus went through thorough checks and is Singapore’s first and only clinically tested low GI and GL multigrain cereal milk drink!
GI and GL. Is there a difference?
GI and GL stand for Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load respectively. It sounds technical but these are terms especially important for Diabetics. Let us break it down for you! (Add the link to GI and GL articles)
GI refers to the carbohydrate quality in food- how it affects your blood sugar. Foods are ranked from 0 to 100 according to how easily they raise blood sugar levels. Low GI foods are digested, absorbed and metabolized more slowly, resulting in a slower rise in blood sugar levels! GL takes into account both GI as well as the amount of carbohydrate in that food, making it a better gauge of how appropriate the food is for you! For Diabetics, the body is unable to produce enough of, or use Insulin, a hormone needed to control the transfer of sugar from your blood to your body cells. This leads to high blood sugar levels after a meal. It is hence important for you to be aware of the type and amount of carbohydrates you are consuming for proper insulin dosage. Consuming low GI and GL food such as GrainsPlus enables you to prevent peaks in blood sugar levels, helping you to manage and prevent Diabetes.
Should I just be concerned about Carbohydrates?
What a great question! It is a myth that Diabetics only need to be concerned about carbohydrate content. In fact, consuming protein and fiber with carbohydrate results in a slower release of sugars into your bloodstream. GrainsPlus is high in protein (5.9g/serve) and low in fat, a formulation that is especially good for blood sugar management!
